Laparoscopic Appendix Surgery
A tube-like organ, the appendix, is attached to the beginning of the large intestine. It is located below and to the right of the navel (belly button). Sometimes the appendix gets inflamed, and in some cases, it has to be removed. The surgical procedure to remove the appendix is called Appendectomy.
Appendectomy is a common surgery that either of the following procedures can do:
- Open Appendectomy – when a large incision is made to remove the appendix
- Laparoscopic Appendix Surgery – the appendix is removed through laparoscopy making very small incisions
What is Laparoscopic Appendix Surgery?
Standard treatment for appendicitis, Laparoscopic Appendix Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Once you are asleep, the doctor will make an incision near your belly button. A miniature narrow tube called a cannula will be inserted and the abdomen will be inflated. The gas will allow your surgeon a clearer view of the appendix.
A laparoscope, which is a long, thin tube with a high-resolution camera at the top, will now be inserted through the incision. When the surgeon locates the appendix, he/ she will tie it off with stitches and remove it. Once removed, the incisions will be cleaned and closed.
