Prostate Surgery

The surgery involves the partial or complete removal of the prostate gland for common reasons like prostate cancer, enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The surgical process is also called a prostatectomy.

A prostate gland is an organ placed below the urinary bladder and in front of the rectum. The gland is responsible for producing fluids to carry sperm and plays a vital role in the male reproductive system.

Depending on the problem, the type of surgery varies.

Prostate surgery procedure for cancer

While treating cancer, the prostate glands and their nearby tissues are usually removed. There are two ways to do a cancer prostate surgery

Open prostatectomy: Here, the doctor makes an incision and removes the cancerous organs and tissues.

Laparoscopic approach: Here, the doctor makes a minimal incision on the skin’s surface to avoid major pain and skin damage.

Prostate surgery procedure for urine flow (BPH – Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)

While treating disorders related to urine flow, there are two ways to approach it. The treatment is provided without any incisions or cuts.

Prostate laser surgery: The doctor uses laser rays to treat BPH by removing the blockage in the urethra to allow better urine flow.

Endoscopic surgery: Instead of making incisions, the doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera to remove the prostate tissues.
