Tonsil Surgery – An Overview

Tonsillectomy is performed to treat one or more of these medical conditions: recurrent infections, severe itching in the throat, or frequently swollen tonsils. This procedure may also be recommended after cancer treatment. In most cases, tonsillectomy is done to remove enlarged tonsils that are affecting health and quality of life. In simple words, a surgical procedure that aims to treat recurrent or chronic tonsillitis.

Why it’s done

If your child’s tonsils are too large for the size of his or her mouth, the doctor may decide to remove them. Because the immune system helps prevent infections following surgery, surgery is not suggested for youngsters whose immune systems have not yet matured. Tonsil surgery is essential when the following symptoms are detected,

  1. Tonsillitis
  2. Sleep apnea
  3. Throat bleeding
  4. Obstructed airways
  5. Chronic sore throats

What to expect?

You may experience pain and discomfort, but there are painkillers available if needed. You should keep taking any medication you’ve been prescribed until your doctor tells you when you can stop.

It’s normal to have a slight sore throat following the procedure but make sure that it doesn’t last longer than this period of time. If the symptoms persist after the first week following surgery, then make sure to contact your doctor right away because there could be an issue with healing or infection developing.
