Upper GI endoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor uses an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera, to examine the lining of your upper GI tract. The treatment is performed by a gastroenterologist, surgeon, or other trained health care expert.
Why is upper GI endoscopy performed?
Upper GI endoscopy is a procedure that doctors use to diagnose and treat symptoms and illnesses affecting the oesophagus, stomach, and upper intestine or duodenum.
Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract can be used to diagnose a variety of illnesses, including:
- Barrett’s oesophagus
- Celiac disease
- Strictures or narrowing of the oesophagus obstructions
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux illness
- Ulcers
- Cancer
- Inflammation, or swelling
Upper GI endoscopy can also assist in determining the origin of unexplained symptoms such as bloating, gas, and indigestion, heartburn that persists, issues with bruising, nausea, vomiting and putting up with inexplicable weight loss
Upper GI endoscopy is also used by doctors to
- Remove any things that may be lodged in the upper GI tract, including food.
- Polyps and other growth places such as Feeding tubes or drainage tubes are removed.
- Treat ulcer bleeding, oesophageal varices, and other oesophagal disorders.
- A tiny balloon put through the endoscope can be used to dilate or open strictures.
- Treat ulcer bleeding, oesophagal varices, and other oesophageal disorders.
Doctors are now using upper GI endoscopy to carry out weight loss therapy for some obese people.
