Ureteric Stenting

Ureteric Stenting

By nature, ureters carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. Sometimes blockage in the ureters prevents the urine transfer. Ureteral stents are placed within the ureter along its length to avoid complications in the urinary system.

Ureteral stents are flexible, thin tubes that connect the kidney and the bladder. These tubes run along the entire length of the ureter and keep them open.

What is the Process of Ureteric Stenting?

Ureteric stenting is an outpatient procedure  and the patients are sent home the same day. A urologist, an expert in the urinary system’s medicinal field, does the operation.

The patients are generally under spinal anaesthesia during the operation process. Using the X-rays and ultrasound scans as guidance, the camera-like device (called cystoscopy or ureteroscopy) is inserted inside the urinary bladder.

The lower ends of the ureters are located using the scope, and the doctor passes the stent through them up to the kidney. Later they fix the coil ends of stents inside the kidney and the urinary bladder. The stents ensure the ureteral track stays open.

Once the procedure is over, the doctor removes the stent after a few days or weeks, once the kidney stones or infection clears up.
